Although knedlíky are a food that has a lot of history, in the 17th century they were given a twist and began to be prepared fried and stuffed with plums , resulting in a spectacular dessert, since grated cottage cheese and butter were added on top. melted.

It was a very popular meal that was usually prepared from May to November and used seasonal fruit such as strawberries, cherries, apricots, blueberries or plums. The latter achieved great popularity, as they became a favorite delicacy of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the favorite dish of the first Czechoslovak president , Tomas Garrigue Masaryk.

Preparation of strawberry knedlíky

  1. First we mix the sugar with the egg and beat it well until a whitish foam comes out. At that moment, we add the cottage cheese and butter, mixing everything well so that there are no lumps.
  2. Sift the flour and add it little by little to the mixture until it is thick enough to be kneaded by hand. We knead the dough well, ensuring that everything is well integrated. Although it is sticky, it will be easy to manipulate.
  3. We make balls with the dough that are not too big and cut them in half. We flatten them into a bowl shape and add the strawberry jam and then carefully close them, giving them a round shape.
  4. Heat a pot and, when it starts to boil, carefully add the balls. We let them boil until they rise to the surface and then let them boil for 5 minutes.
  5. After this time, we take the balls out of the water, drain them well and place them on a plate, pouring the powdered sugar, melted butter and cinnamon on top. Ready to eat.

Tips for perfect strawberry knedlíky

  • We can make the filling with any fruit jam we fancy, but it will be better if the jam is homemade.
  • These knedlíky can be frozen without a problem. We store them in a sealed container before boiling them in the freezer and they will last up to 6 months.
  • The ideal is to try a first knedlíky as it comes out of cooking, since the times vary depending on the size of the dough and the jam.
