How to make a perfect homemade barbecue sauce to accompany your dishes and roasts

  • For the homemade barbecue sauce (approximately half a liter)
  • 250g. chive or white onion
  • 100 ml extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons Perrins or Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 4 teaspoons grape or apple cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon grain mustard (in this case Dijon)
  • 2 heaped tablespoons of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of La Vera paprika (half sweet and half spicy, you can also add hot sauce)
  • 250 ml fried tomato sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 50 to 100 ml. of water (optional, depending on how we want the thickness of the sauce)
  • Salt (if it were smoked it would be perfect) and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)

Barbecue sauce or BBQ sauce is one of my favorite sauces , due to its flavor, texture and uses in cooking. Most people usually buy it thinking that it is very difficult to prepare at home, but the truth is that it is very easy and with few ingredients. In addition to being able to make it to your liking and with the special touch that differentiates it from the rest.

In our case we present you a basic homemade barbecue sauce , balanced, simple and with a flavor that will conquer you. You will surely make it more than once, the first time as a test and then playing with your tastes. A sauce that combines great with meat, the same with barbecue ribs , roast chicken or our famous chicken wings . Although it is a perfect complement to a hamburger or some roasted potatoes or vegetables . You see, a versatile sauce full of flavor that serves as an accompaniment not only to meat but also to fish, vegetables, potatoes or even pasta dishes.

If you want to be the surprise of your next barbecue or barbecue with friends, prepare your own barbecue sauce at home, with the spicy touch you prefer, with more or less Worcestershire, English or Perris sauce. You can also give it that smoky touch (from commercial sauces) with smoked salt that is already sold in all supermarkets.

This type of sauce combines the acidic flavor with the sweet, we can also add our favorite spices and give it a unique touch. Although always respecting its base, it must contain: tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, soy and honey. To these ingredients I have added the delicious touch so that everyone licks their fingers until the plate is empty. Do you dare to prepare it?

Preparation of the barbecue sauce

We are going to prepare approximately half a liter, as it keeps very well for several days in the refrigerator or you can always freeze it and have it ready for any recipe you can think of.

  1. We cut the onion or chive very finely. Sauté these ingredients over medium heat in a large saucepan with a good splash of extra virgin olive oil. I imagine that in the US they do this with butter, so it can also be done with the same amount of this ingredient. We cook for about 5 minutes until they are soft.
  2. We turn off the heat and add the different types of sauce. The ingredients, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, honey, Dijon mustard sauce and ketchup. We stir well until all the flavors are well integrated.
  3. We put the pot back on low heat. We add  the homemade tomato sauce , water, paprika, oregano, salt and freshly ground black pepper. We stir again and cook at medium temperature for 5 more minutes.
  4. When it starts to thicken, we give it a touch of the blender so that it becomes a homogeneous sauce with a concentrated flavor. We taste the salt and freshly ground black pepper, if necessary we sprinkle with a little more. If you notice that it is still very liquid, we increase the temperature of the heat. We stir constantly so that it reduces, it has to be to your liking.
  5. If you like the sauce with a spicy touch, this is the time to add it. I recommend a  few drops of hot sauce, cayenne or chilli  powder to taste. We let it rest and reserve. How easy is it to make this sauce?

You can store this sauce in an airtight glass container or jar in the refrigerator for about a week. You can even double the ingredients and gift your own barbecue sauce to friends or family.
