Ingredients

  • 1 chicken breast (cooked and shredded, about 400 grams)
  • 2 tomatoes or tomatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 1 teaspoon (dessert type) of powdered or ground cinnamon

In Mexico we find a large number of soups with very different flavors than what we are used to, so it can be a nice change of scenery if we are already bored of the typical chicken soup. This lime soup is a real delight that is worth trying. Its flavor is nothing like what we are used to with a soup, the ingredients are easy to find and the recipe is very simple , so there is no excuse not to make it at home.

Lime soup is a traditional dish from the Yucatán province in Mexico. It is a recipe resulting from the crossing of two cultures. We find the Mexican culture with its spicy touch thanks to the chili so present in Mexican gastronomy, and the European culture with the acidic flavor of lime, a fruit from Europe. The union of two cultures in a single dish. Authentic fantasy.

Preparation of lime soup

  1. First we cook the chicken in a pot with the peeled garlic cloves, the cloves and a pinch of salt. When it is cooked, we remove it from the heat to shred the chicken and keep the broth for later use.
  2. In a frying pan, sauté the onion, diced tomato, a teaspoon of minced garlic, cumin, cinnamon, pepper and a little habanero chili.
  3. Once the sauce is ready, in a pot we pour the broth that we had reserved with the sauce made previously and bring it to a boil. Once it has started to boil, add the cut limes, turn off the heat and let it rest for a few minutes.
  4. In a separate pan, fry the Mexican tortillas until they are golden brown and crispy, and add them to the soup. We can prepare a pico de gallo to accompany and add to this soup to taste. A delicious dish ready to enjoy.

This Yucatan-style lime soup is served accompanied by fried tortilla strips and a basic pico de gallo, with tomato, onion and a little avocado cut into small pieces. And each one to taste. And if you like it with more lime, you know…

Tips for a perfect lime soup

  • Although chicken breast is normally used to make the broth, it is better to use the leg and thigh , as they give it much more flavor.
  • We can add more or less habanero chili depending on how spicy we want, to the consumer’s taste.
  • We have to keep a close eye on the lime so that it does not make the dish bitter but does give it that acidic touch. It is not good to add the lime when the broth is still cooking.
